Overview

Say an NGO in southern India has an excellent program-model to educate at-risk street children on the dangers of drugs.  They want to reach more children so they are considering hiring more staff in other Indian cities.  However, due to the expense associated with this, they know that scaling-up will take years.  A better option, they decide, is to scale-out, or partner with like-minded NGOs interested in adopting and adapting their program model.

The benefit of this is strategy are many.
  • The cost to the NGO of expanding their original program is now shared with the organization(s) adopting/adapting it
  • The new partner organization(s) will know the local needs already and therefore will be able to adapt the program-model accordingly.
  • The NGO that created the program-model can now focus on identifying new partners, designing training programs, funding for further replication, marketing, and other centralized services to benefit the entire network of partners.

Even though, scaling-out can be a great strategy with huge potential benefits, it’s not without its pitfalls.  Many organizations find it extremely challenging to transition from operating their own programs to training others to adopt/adapt them .  Adaptive Blueprinting was designed to make the process much simpler by providing a 5-stage step-by-step framework and set of tools based on best practices in scaling-out.
